Having played this game I can say that if it weren’t a Harry Potter Game few people would play it.
The gameplay is repetitive, the characters shallow, the plot all about how the slaves should want to remain subordinated, and most egregious to me, the way they treat beasts.
When it comes to the story, the start was well done particularly with the story choice but by the start of the end, you can see just how half-finished the story was. I did like the last few quests but there’s not a lot of choices you can make and none that result in a significant change in the ending.
The relationship quests are interesting in concept but also clearly rushed and like the main story have some retcons that are really annoying and worst of all, while three houses had characters with relationship quests, it seems the one for Ravenclaw was cut despite it having the perfect setup especially in conjunction with the other three.
The Merlin Trials are endless and the same old thing, you can’t even enter all the vaults, and the side quests are what you’d expect for a AAA game.
The broom trials are cool for all of 5 minutes then get boring and while the challenges are interesting, they get redundant as do the field guide pages. At least they made Professor Black being the least popular Hogwarts Headmaster seem justified with the whole Quidditch thing and his speech at the end of the game that they in my opinion fumbled.
I will say, the music is quite good especially the map music, it’s not John Williams but it’s still very pleasant.
The world felt so condensed and it frustrated me especially shrinking the Forbidden Forest, that took me out of the immersion. In the books, it seemed vast and mysterious. In the game it seems questionable that centaurs and Acromantulas could actually fit in it.
Finally the Beasts.
Spoiler: in the game there are poachers trying to kidnap animals so how do you rescue them? By kidnapping them first. I wish I was kidding. Oh and by breeding them in the Room of Requirement.
This game got as far as it did on nostalgia fumes. When I first got it, I played through it twice but stopped two months after launch out of boredom. A year later, I decided to pick it up again and after 2 hours apart from doing side quests I hadn’t before, I’m too bored to do the rest. Not worth the money at all.
