TW: spoilers ahead:
I had such high hopes for this movie. A24 we must do better. I usually end up loving every single a24 movie I watch especially if it is horror, but not this. All the material was there to build the perfect film, the cast, the acting and the right focus on a topic that has not been touched before in this way in movies. The problem was the execution. The build up was extremely slow, the plot was very predictable and the jump scares were mediocre considering it was a horror movie, really… a spider. The setting was also very small, maybe it’s just me but the trailer gave me the impression that it was gonna be more like a maze or something bigger. It was underwhelming to say the least and the trailer made it look better than what it really was. Now once again, filming and acting was perfect, there were fascinating points made about control and capitalism but it just didn’t hit the target right.
I thought they would have to encounter reminders of ways religion has done wrong and prove them wrong with all the evil there is to show it all the negative effects it has had. But no, that would’ve been too good, instead we got a room full of religious people that said they “believed” that he had just trapped there forever for “believing” instead of actually getting his point across he played a word game and showed them what the consequences of their actions look like. In the end ofcourse a lot of them remained faithful no matter whether they escaped or not. The ending is conflicting as it shows that maybe there are miracles. I’m not exactly religious but even I know if the antagonist himself doesent understand fully either because people who are deeply devoted will stick to their faith despite knowing they won’t be saved, like the sister said it’s the faith and prayer that keeps people going not the result or miracle they receive, the hope it gives them. In conclusion, it was an alright movie, but a24 can do better with the plot.
