It's because of this movie that I exist. My Dad took my Mom out on a date to see 'Singin' in the Rain' the night he proposed to her. So it's always held a special place in our house. It has its slow points - Moses Supposes could have been done in verse in about half the time and the Broadway Melody number is excruciating - but let's face it, we're still talking about it 70 years after it came out and someone probably will be 100 years from now. MGM knew how to get the people in the seats in 1952 is all I'm saying.

I recently saw the television production of this play after seeing it live in London in 1990. The years have not dimmed the bite and humorous tone of the ramblings of a locked in alcoholic columnist in any way. Peter O’Toole as always knocks it out of the park and the supporting cast does it’s job well. As an American the sly references to cultured London of the Sixties and Seventies fall flat at times but there is enough explanation that it isn’t lost on the ignorant. Well done everyone.
