I just saw the show, and LOVED it. Its a classic story that is simply told, and a nice change from all the high-tech and high budget content out there. The characters are endearing, and until about halfway through, I wasn't sure if I was team Alex, or team Cole. It took that long to unpack the characters, and to see that Jackie is meant to be with Cole, and vice versa. Why? Because she brings out the best of him, and makes him want to be a better man. And he is helping her come out of her shell and find love and security again, after all her tragic losses. If you watch their interactions closely, you see Cole is always there for her: picking her up, keeping her warm, making sure she doesn't drink too much, helping her with what matters to her (picking the flowers, fixing the teapot). Cole is no bad boy, he's just lost after having his life, identity and future ripped away from him. Just like Jackie. It makes them soul mates. Cole is judged and largely misunderstood by most...including Jackie, but she keeps seeing through it. And she doesn't give up on him.
Alex is sweet, but her heart is with Cole. And his stotyline will pop the more h
e comes out of the shadow of his brother and becomes his own man.
I have read some of the critic reviews, many negative. And based on how popular the show is with reviewers, I am not the only one who clearly disagrees.
The chemistry between Jackie and Cole is palpable, and you can feel the pull through the screen in every scene they have together.
But the real treat is the performances of these young/new actors, who were all superbly cast (all of the Walters and support cast). And a few bonuses: the breathtaking Alberta setting and incredible soundtrack - I can't believe Champagne Kisses was released in 2014!
I am thrilled Netflix ordered a 2nd season, and can't wait to see what happens next.
