The film delivers on the suspense and horror promised by the trailer, but is unfortunately unable to balance thrill with depth of character. Being based upon an extreme emergency situation, Crawl makes commendable use natural hazards and horror techniques to keep you riveted (personally I was gripping my chair through much of the feature to stop myself from leaping out of it). On the other hand, while the dynamic between the lead and her father had the potential to provide a strong emotional aspect to the film, the writing for their dialogue was uninspired. The relationship was obviously meant to motivate the lead to harness her survival instincts, but achieved little else other than exposition. Thankfully, the lack of depth does not remove much from the well-executed action and suspense, which is why I recommend this movie on it’s strengths as a thriller.
