I just finished reading "I'll be the one" by Lyla Lee (well listening to bc that's how I read these days ๐ ). It is a very cute YA novel with a sweet story all about body positivity and loving yourself even when others don't see you for all you are worth . The story follows a 16 year old girl, Skye, who identify as bisexual and who has been considered "fat" all of her life, on a journey of auditioning for a K-POP talent show (think America's got talent for K-POP singers and dancers). It also has a lot of themes of figuring out ones identity, culturally as well as grappling with accepting ones sexuality in cultures where it isn't always accepted. What I really loved about the book was how the book talked through the big and confusing emotions young people have about fitting in, getting along with their parents, feeling awkward, being afraid, having crushes, and making good friends. The storyline is very PG and probably geared towards middle to high school age, but I think it would still be fun for a variety of readers! I look forward to checking out her newest novel, " Flip the script", which promises more queer characters and relationships ๐ฅฐ. The author also writes a children's book series featuring a young Asian American character, Mindy Kim , for younger readers.
