Key point: Filmed at the highest standard. Acted so well, it felt very real, relatable at times, and a bit scary (which is good for a psychological thriller!). Overall, 5 stars for the production, the acting that made you feel you were in the room too, and the horror kicks! But... It's 3/5 for me... Even though at times, it felt real... So on a side note kudos for how it was made and set in the British Countryside... Gave great feel to it...
Review.
The British father's brutality alongside the mother's docile nature, paired with their uncouth humour was transparently odd... The lure made by them was a weak one, and one that was only held mildly together by the American couple's self-interest and curiosity for their own distaste. The gripping twist of the British couples murders of families they meet on holidays, and the kidnapping of each families child before replacing them in succession with the next families child, was truly a dark and unsettling twist.
The actors portrayed their fear, their despair, their awkwardness, and evil and callousness equally well. The performance was believable, it seemed very relatable in parts, almost familiar in its family dynamics (less so at times with the British family as things were unravelling until they were clearly in a realm of their own).
The film resembles something of a news headline that captures the imagination, and for those wondering it seems to creatively fill in the blanks of what might well have happened to any such family that once went missing in such a way.
In an age of awareness, it brings the imagination to a halt with what could be entirely possible should anyone follow in the American families footsteps.
A gripping, cold, sometimes disturbed horror with a slow and curious almost familiar burn throughout the first hour. With a chaotic ending, that's sudden at times, and gruesome which eventually gives the audience what it needs, a winner.
A good ending overall, for a garish thriller of a visit to the country side for so many ill-fated families.
Note: Awkward, unsettling, gory, dark, horror... For the hardened horror film watcher. It's a very dark film in all honesty. It's for the curious and not to be enjoyed in my opinion, it's too dark.
Negatives: I don't like this bit but if someone is curious... The story was dark and the script told the story, that's it. I feel it was missing intelligent moments though, or inventive moments. I don't want to sound rude, but I felt like I'd watched so many parts of this film before as they were so similar to other films. At a point quite early on, I'd predicted the outcome and what was going to happen. I can't say for myself it held any surprises or ingenious moments. It felt, 3 stars, well acted, but slightly predictable. Also, though based off another earlier film, I'm trying to look at this film standalone.
