What a waste of time. I’m making a leap here, but I think the 5-star reviews are mostly from Millennials and Gen Z’ers who don’t or can’t appreciate that a good story is equally as important to a film as the action. This movie didn’t have a good premise (or there wasn’t one that I cared about), which made the action less impactful.
I was 18 when the movie Aliens came out in 1986, and I went to the theatre by myself to see it. After all these years, I still remember the names of key characters without looking them up on the internet -Ripley, Nute, Hicks, Hudson, Sanchez - and others that I can clearly visualize even if I don’t remember the character’s name. That’s because the story, actors and directors, made you care about the characters and you were invested in their success. I couldn’t tell you the name of a single person in this new Alien film. There was zero character development, so I really didn’t care what happened to them.
Plus, the CGI was beyond awful! The Synthetic Rook’s head looked too small for the body and I’m not sure what the hell the hybrid human/alien was supposed to be!
I could go on and on picking the movie apart (there’s a lot of material to do so), but I think you get the drift. If you want to watch fun and smart films about Aliens, you should rewatch the first two movies in this series. Or, if you prefer sci-fi with no story, mediocre action, bad actors and stupid CGI, then this movie won’t disappoint.
