I fold the pages, bend the covers, stuff them in my handbag, cover them in greasy fingerprints, in coffee, in wine, in bathwater. I lose them, lend them out, give them away. It’s not that I mean to be careless, but the reverence I have for books only extends to the words on the page, the magic between the lines. I think that’s why I’m such a good bookseller. I’m selling things, artefacts, objects, yes. But that’s not all. I’m also selling magic."

"Death of a book seller" by Alice Slater is a book I picked up at the airport to read by the pool, a light casual reading. It tells the story of Roach, a young alternative bookseller obsessed with true crime, meeting Laura, a pretty and charismatic book seller she is going to become obsessed with.
.
It started very very badly. The character of Roach being extremely unlikable, it was difficult to get into it. But I loved how the tables turned and how the characters developed. I also thought it very suspenseful, wondering the whole novel who's the book seller to die, and how... It doesn't pretend to be a very deep novel but it definitely fulfilled its job of being entertaining. Therefore I give it a 8/10.
