I thought this film was pretty poor, but there were redeeming qualities I'll talk about first.
Firstly, I like that they could have
made this a socialism vs capitalism, right vs left, politically motivated thing- don't get me wrong, I like politics, but it doesn't need to be everywhere. Instead, by having the resistance force be California, the textbook left-wing state, and Texas, the textbook right-wing state, they removed this concern I had going into it.
The action at the end was also fantastic; the only issue I had with it was how long you had to put up with nothing happening to get to that point.
Unfortunately, that's where the positives end.
For the negatives, I'll start with the lack of context? Why are California and Texas trying to overthrow the US government? What about the other states? Washington and Oregon aren't all to far away politically and culturally from California, what about them? New Mexico, Arizona, and I suppose Nevada and Utah too, they're between the two states, what are they doing in all of this? I went into this film with a rough understanding of the plot. Cali and Texas are trying to kill Ron Swanson, but after finishing the film, I still have the same amount of context.
The set pieces were a bit odd. In parts, it felt post-apocalyptic, other bits looked like a standard day in the rust belt, and some of it felt like nothing was up at all. I know they even referenced this last point in one of the scenes, but that still doesn't make it okay. Why is it that way? In 100 minutes, they could have spent a lot more time providing context to what was going on, but instead nothing really happened until for some reason the girl gets into another car and is almost executed. The film before this is just a lot of conversations that weren't really very interesting at all.
This film was really disappointing. They could have done so much more to make for an interesting watch in the time that they had, but they chose not to.
2/5. Not god awful, and with some enjoyable parts at the end, but I can't see myself ever sitting down to watch it again
