As a teenager in the '50's South America entranced me, and two books became my 'bibles'. The Rivers Ran East, and Tschiffely's Ride, both of which I still have and prize.
I've always found it remarkable that Leonard Clark could have kept track of all the flora and fauna he encountered, for he must have been travelling very light, yet he apparently still managed to keep copious notes and his Leica camera dry and workable in extremely difficult conditions.
Clark wrote other books, and information about him is not difficult to find, but about Inez Pokorny I can find only that she died in New York City in 1977, otherwise she seems lost to history. Pity.
That Clark was looking for gold interested me, coming as I do from a gold mining family in Central Otago in NZ's South Island.
