I don’t usually do stuff like this, but there’s a lot of negativity going around in the reviews for this movie that I wanna talk about for those of you who are looking at these deciding whether or not to watch this movie. I do think it’s a movie that’s worth your time, but you need to have some expectations going into it.
The bad reviews are totally correct. All the characters (especially Adam Sandler’s Howard) are irredeemably awful to anyone and everyone around them. There is not a likeable character to be found in this movie. However, you’re not really supposed to like them. Why would you sympathize with Howard, who whines like a 4-year-old when he doesn’t get his way? You’re SUPPOSED to not like these characters, so it’s satisfying when the traditional Safdie Brothers thing happens and the characters eat it and fall flat on their faces. When Howard hits rock bottom, it feels good. If you legitimately like Howard’s character and feel he got it rough, I question your judgement of character.
And this is reflected in the movie as a whole. While it is a good movie, it is NOT a fun one. The opening scene makes it very apparent that this movie pulls no punches and it’s going to make you uncomfortable. I winced and looked away several times during this movie. This movie goes to the deepest, darkest areas of New York’s diamond district and it’s not a pretty sight. It will make you mad, it will make you disgusted, and it will make you wanna see as much destruction as possible by the end. If you’re looking for a movie to make you feel good, this is not the movie for you. If you want a movie to challenge you in a way few movies attempt to and to see an unreal Adam Sandler in the lead role, you can’t do much better than Uncut Gems.
