Very well-balanced treatment of a low period in American justice. Handsomely treated in its look, costuming and feel. The performances are uniformly strong, sometimes veering into noir stereotyping but managing to pull out before parody takes over. This is not Perry Mason in a Raymond Burr suit. It works on its own terms. The Mason character is much closer to the very early Gardner before it became set in stone.
