It is difficult to find period pieces nowadays that aren't stuffed with nudity and super raunchy sex scenes. And although this one had some brief nudity and a few sex scenes, it was not so much that it distracted from the acting and storyline. Costuming and sets were incredible. The acting was top notch. I did not recognize many of the actors, and that helped it feel more authentic (Shoutout to Roy from The Office!). The storyline races along with many twists and turns and jaw dropping moments. It definitely held our attention and kept us coming back for each episode. Some are calling this a cheap Game of Thrones, but I never watched GOT so I can't say whether it compares or not. Overall, my husband and I really enjoyed this series, although the underlying theme (trust no one, put yourself first at all costs) was depressing and sometimes disturbing.

Started off with a bang; gripping and fast paced - but has devolved into a mind numbing, nonstop strand of painful and chaotic memories infused with a semi conscious state.

I love true crime documentaries and movies, so I really had high hopes for this. Well, sad to say, I have stopped and started it like 5 times now…trying to “get back into it” each time. I just find myself getting so bored and I’m completely unattached to any of the characters. The acting is so flat. I’m not sure if it’s the writing or the direction or the actors themselves. This should have been a 2 hour movie, not a multiple episodes long series. It feels stretched thin and very repetitive.

Like so many others have said, it started out great. I was super excited to watch episode two and three and then poof it all went up in smoke into the dust of a tornado. The characters become caricatures very quickly. Things begin to feel off. I suddenly found myself questioning everyone’s actions, reactions and motivations. It’s like the original script writers handed the script over to hormonal teenage girls after the first few episodes. Teenage girls who didn’t pay attention in history class. Teenage girls who don’t understand the actual mindset and realities of people living in 1883 and making their way across the untamed US. Those pioneers didn’t have the luxury of exploring love or waxing philosophical on the plains. It was all about survival and it was brutal. I really wanted to like this.
