I was really looking forward to seeing this movie based upon all the acclaim and oscar wins it got. What a total letdown! There was not a single redeeming quality about it, so how it ever got so many awards just stuns me. How it ever beat out one of the best movies I've seen, A Complete Unknown, is even more stunning. So much for relying on Oscar buzz when targeting new films to see; the ones in power who voted for this piece of crap deserve to be replaced with more discerning film critics/reviewers. If there was a zero star rating option, I would have picked it.

I just finished watching the last episode of this 'spy thriller', and compared with most other such shows I have seen, this ranks right near the bottom. The premise of the storyline seemed intriguing and unique, and I loved Ms. Moss in The Handmaid's Tale, so was psyched up for a great experience. Aside from the great scenery, there wasn't much else to commend. A bunch of inept multi-country agents running around trying to reign in rogue agent Elisabeth Moss who is trying to protect and gain trust of a female Isis operative to find out the details of its planned attack on the US. A scattered series of chases, shootings, and totally implausible situations. The first two or three episodes seemed at least promising, but the last three got progressively more ridiculous. Too many close ups of Moss with her mouth suggestively or sadly open, which seems a trademark of her acting. I had high hopes for this show but was not impressed, and not surprised there is no second season as of yet.

I am increasingly fed up with the obnoxious "my voice should supersede everyone else's" behavior of Whoopi Goldberg. She interrupts and talks over the other hosts and guests, acts like her opinions are more valid than others', and deliberately slouches and eye-rolls on camera to make a point of showing boredom about conversation in progress that she has no interest in. I don't know if she thinks her past and current achievements, or being one of the older hosts, gives her the right to behave so rudely - but the network needs to really think of removing her as a host. It is unfortunate that a woman who has so many great achievements presents herself so negatively on this show. Another suggestion: replace the woman who announces the show - because her voice, particularly the exaggerated way she pronounces some words, ie: "LIVE right NOW" and "View your DEAL", is so annoying, I have started to engage the mute button as soon as the show starts.

The View

I did not have a clue who Oksana Masters was or any part of her background when I selected this book from the library for my next read, but what an incredible story she has written. I just finished The Hard Parts, and confess that I was in tears throughout many parts of the last 3 chapters which were particularly gut-wrenching emotionally. To hear how this young woman who was raised from infancy to age 7 in an impoverished Ukrainian orphanage grew to become a top US paralympic athlete should be an inspiration to all. It is a story of courage, persistence through adversity, the costs and rewards of pursuing a dream - and most important - the power of love as the catalyst to overcoming the most difficult obstacles. It was well written, authentic, and compelling, and I hope Ms. Masters continues to write - she has proven that her gifts go far beyond athletics.
