I noticed a long time ago that people don’t perform well when you threaten to fire them. There might be a spike in their performance, but 99% percent is short lived. Once the perceived danger passes, the performance is down. The Cortisol and Adrenalin levels go back to normal and so does performance.
Instead, I started working with my people to find out what they need; provided options for their needs, reassured them that they are valued, wanted, and supported. They are honest and opened; they ask questions and look for ways to improve.
I, instinctively provided the circle of trust and I had the proof that it worked. I, now, have to find a way to complete the circle with my peers.
Servant leadership is not a communist/socialist concept. In socialism, there is no respect for people boundaries or feelings; leaders are oriented towards their own good. After living in such an environment, capitalism sounds like heaven on earth.
