Such a missed opportunity. Watched this in hopes of learning something, but was so disappointed. Will Ferrel acted from the start as if he already understood and accepted everything about Harper’s transition. There was no arc of deepening understanding through the film’s many conversations. In fact, it seemed no one in Harper’s life had even the slightest difficulty accepting this change. Lucky Harper - but hard to believe. Harper offers to “answer anything” but Will ducks any question that can illuminate the reality of trans life. It’s all support, humor, and winning “ally of the year”. Yes, they come off a likable, but they have failed if the goal was to uncover some of the hidden aspects of transgender life.
