To preface this, I have seen every single Saw movie there is and some I have watched multiple times. The only one I really didn't like was Jigsaw. I went into this as a Saw fan, and having read some of the mixed reviews I was certainly unsure to say the least.
However, that said, this film is actually really good. Maybe not from a movie buff perspective (some of the camera movements, script choices and acting choices by Chris Rock was questionable to me) but as a fan of Saw I had a good time with this film. The Saw traps were as gory and grim as ever, with the added bonus of ensuring they maintained the Jigsaw standard of "if you want to escape badly enough, there's a way to do so" which I always worry will be abandoned in some of the new iterations.
The plot itself revolving around a corrupt police department was very interesting and as always remains quite a relevant topic, and left the killings themselves in a morally grey hotspot which for a movie goer is always good to sink your teeth into.
I also found Chris Rock to actually be quite a good fit for this film. Whilst there were moments where I felt the acting choices he made were a bit jarring, on the whole he was a joy to watch and seemed to not have too many issues fitting into a serious role.

The one thing I will say is that I guessed the killer easily within the first ten minutes. And whilst I could see Spiral's attempts to throw us off the scent, it seemed glaringly obvious to me and at no point did I change my mind, even when the character was seemingly dead.
I will leave the identity of the killer nameless here however I will say that the reason I still knew who the killer was despite them seeming to have died is because with all of the other killings, they show you the trap in all its gory glory. However, for this one you just see a dead body and assume its the killer. For me it was a dead giveaway that my hunch had been right. Pun intended.
Either way, this film was a hoot and I definitely think if you're a fan of Saw or horror in general, you shpuld reserve your judgement and give it a go. I had a great time.
