Spoiler alert- I read this book as part of a spontaneous book club with my sister. She enjoyed it more than I did. I thought the plot was unrealistic to think Kya could have been able to care for herself and understand all the various adult topics in such detail even though she was abandoned at such a young age. It was confusing when trying to understand the perspective of the narrator which would emphasize with Kya, but then switch to explaining facts about the murder.
The plot line of Chase falling in love with her yet all of a sudden it is revealed he is getting married was pretty far-fetched. He introduces his friends to Kya but not his fiance who herself showed no interest in this woman. If the whole town knew about Chase's relationship with Kya, why didn't his fiancé question the relationship.
The writing style was very verbose with lengthy descriptions of the marsh and nature. I had to re-read those portions due to their long length. Not sure the lengthy descriptions added much to the storyline other than to give the reader an appreciation for the environment for which Kya grew up and studied.
There could have been a better description of the crime scene and how Chase could have fallen from it. There was no talk about interviews that would have been done with Tate, Chase's wife, Chase's friends, etc..Also, the sheriff said they would bring Kya in for questioning but all of a sudden she was arrested and no mention of questioning her from the sheriff.
Honestly, I wish I have gotten my time back that I spent reading this book. It was a very depressing book and painful for me to read.
