As a fan of Carry on films and I grew up watching them the empty roads take me back to the early 70s just such nostalgia. This was the first problem it was all shot in studio! The next problem was it was not camp enough and I am not talking about Carry On Camping! The cast apart from Sid James in the originals were very camp! Kenneth carried the films. This was no different Julian Clary carried this film! I think had he been made Columbus rather than a side role it may have worked. The few innuendo gags made me laugh but there were just not enough of them. By the 90s WOKE had already begun. Alternative comedy and sexism (even when agreed to by Hattie and the other female cast in the originals just struggled now with comics (who apart from Julian Clary) simply no longer could get away with it! As Television even in the late 80s still rarely employed very camp people there simply were not enough actors to do this. So you had Alexie Sayle? Uh?! And Keith Allen? And others who were just out of place! They were more suited to a Krays movie! I think this was just miscast. Columbus played by Clary with as many camp one liners as he could muster (with a writing credit) And his side kick Rik Mayal (who could easily camp it up!) would have been funnier and just had the older originals as say the King and Chief (just as a nod to the old days) then built around that I feel would have at least rescued it!
