When series hit the big screen it is always a question of how different it will be in both style and story telling. Luther: The Fallen Sun shifts gears in such a way it could almost be considered a complete standalone (in style and story telling at least) if not for Idris Elba's committed reprise.
Perhaps it is that very notion that this film drew such negative review, bigger budget means bigger audience and bigger audience means bigger problems. Is this film flawed? Yes. Could it have been better? Of course. Is the series better than the film? Absolutely. Critics and audiences new to London's grittiest detective will no doubt pick up on the various plot holes and implausibilities, drawing their attention away from what they should really be absorbing, which is the masterful performances of both Idris Elba and Andy Serkis.
The storyline itself may be somewhat uninspired and you would be forgiven if at moments you thought you were watching a Black Mirror episode, but if you can look passed a lacklustre plot, you will find a captivating detective in Elba that you can not help but root for and maybe then you will detect what this film really is, because Luther: The Fallen Sun has plenty of everything that longtime fans of the series will be looking for.
