It’s really hard to explain just how entertaining this film is without giving away spoilers, but honestly, this was an entertaining watch as far as Marvel films go!
I was one of the majority who paid no mind to the films release on account of the truly inaccurate poor reviews, until one night I had just finished working my way through several of the Phase 1-4 films. Desperate to continue taking advantage of my brother in laws Disney + account (and just keep binging marvel films in release-date order), I came across this movie and decided to read up on some of the reviews; similar to this one I’m writing, and ultimately decided to give it a try.
I was genuinely surprised with just how entertaining this movie was! The first 20-30 minutes are a bit stale, and gave off the impression of “trying too hard” for comedy’s sake. I was determined to push through on account of the surprisingly good reviews I had read. Surely enough, after about 30 minutes or so, this movie really started to slap! The action sequences are pretty tight! The comedy was actually quite funny at times. The storyline came together (though there are a few references that are clearly meant for the die hard Marvel fans who watch all the shows, specials, e.t.c). There were even some iconic moments that a true theatre/musical (yes, I mean as in musical theatre) fan could truly appreciate, and have a great time with.
I’m sure a lot of people, including myself decided to pass on this film given the poor reception of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, and anything associated with it, but the poor rep this film has accrued must clearly come from a vast majority of people who hear poor, inaccurate criticism and choose to take it at face value(guilty😅). I can’t express enough that this film is at least on par with the high tier phase 2, and even phase 3 films. It held its own! I also feel the need to mention (as someone who is annoyed by it) that there were no gratuitous “girl power” moments in the film. If anything, one of the closing action sequences was nearly as well put together, and choreographed as the fight scene between Cap., Fat Thor, and Tony, vs Thanos in Avengers Endgame, just a tad bit lower stakes.
I believe that this film has been greatly swept under the rug, and given how I felt when reluctantly beginning to watch it, I understand why. All that said, it was genuinely a really entertaining watch! I have no problem recommending it to any one who likes Marvel films; not with the mindset of “is this even canon bro?” but to simply watch a high quality, high production value, action packed film that brings true entertainment. This is what Marvel does, and in my opinion, they do it pretty well most of the time. This is one those times
