You have to watch it all. Every episode. It's heartbreaking really. Jerrod certainly doesn't edit himself into a positive light. It's reality in the best and worst of honesty. It's uncomfortable and there are moments you need to look away and want to melt into your couch out of secondary awkwardness.
Jerrod's deep hurt over his dad's cheating/lying/absences and his mother, Cynthia, essentially choosing her relationship with god and religion over him - after he felt he loved and protected her his whole life, is palpable. Jess is a breakout star if only for her one scene with Cynthia telling her straight out that maybe she's being called to "do better".
It was surprising but I did love seeing how his dad seemed much open to accepting Jerrod being gay and having a boyfriend. He actually seemed much more open to that and talking about it, than talking about his own past of a double life.
It was interesting seeing how Jerrod and Michael really put the effort, even through some jealousy, lying, and hurt, to figure out the best way to make their relationship work. Not conventionally, but what works for them.
The last scenes gave some hope that Jerrod and his mom might be able, in time, to find some peace.
