I’m so happy to say that Hellboy is a wonderfully made movie. Yes, the budget shows from time to time ($50 mil as opposed to the norm of $75-$125 mil for comic book fare), and yes, some of the dialogue can be clunky, but it was made with so much care and respect for Mignola’s universe and the look and feel of his books that I can’t help but love it. The Baba Yaga, Gruagach, Hellboy In Mexico, Captain Daimio, a couple of references I won’t state for spoiler reasons, and Lobster flippin’ Johnson are all accounted for in all their gross, pulpy glory. Mila Jovovich was a perfect pick for Nimue. Can’t recommend this enough for fans of the comics. HOWEVER, I can also say that if you’re more familiar with Guillermo del Toro’s films than the books they’re based on, this movie may not be something you’re into at first because it is WAY more closely related to the horror/weird fiction mystery side of the books. Sorry for the rant, y’all. Just really stoked that my favorite fictional character of all time has been done justice after reading four thousand reviews dumping all over the movie. Again, it’s not Citizen Kane, but it’s definitely one excellent Hellboy movie.
SIDE NOTE: stick around after the credits.
