The French Dispatch is one of Wes Anderson’s most disappointing films. It still has all the things that makes his other films great like the amazing set pieces thoughtfully placed from scene to scene, interesting and intelligent dialogue from seasoned actors throughout, music that “works”, nice editing and stylized work, etc. Unfortunately, even having a lot of these characteristics in the movie, it misses the most important part of feeling. There are three different movies within this one and arguably they are in the wrong order. I liked the first one, but the other two were pretty much forgettable. The movie just seems like all of the things you love about Wes Anderson films, but mashed together to try and make a coherent movie. It’s not his best work but still worth watching for his unique film techniques. 2.5 stars
