i watched 28 Years Later when it first released and… I’m split 50/50 on it.
The opening in the Scottish Highlands was awesome, little Jimmy running from the infected while his dad accepts his fate was such a strong start. I also loved how they showed the infected surviving after 28 years, eating animals raw and "drinking" in this feral way without overexplaining it.
The idea of a ‘smarter’ Alpha infected was cool, even if the way they executed it could’ve been better. The little horror nods to other zombie/vampire films were a nice touch too (though please, in the next one, give the infected some clothes, the constant naked look gets old).
The problem is, once the plot kicks in, it’s all over the place. Spike and his dad’s hunting trip turning into an Alpha chase was fine, but then the story drifts, affairs, a weird bone monument undertaker, a pregnant infected giving birth, and finally, a totally out-of-tone ending with Spike being rescued by a cult that looked like tracksuit-wearing Power Rangers. The atmosphere just didn’t match the earlier films, 28 Days Later had me tense the whole time, but here I never felt that same eerie, unsettling dread. Characters were also kind of thin, and the ending… yeah, one of the weakest in the series for me.
If you’re a die-hard fan, maybe check it out for the lore, but for most people I’d say wait for streaming. It’s not unwatchable, but it could’ve been so much better if they focused on the tension and grounded horror that made the first two so good.
