This book was not “banned” by the government. It was discontinued by Dr. Seuss in 2021 after they reviewed several titles and found that some of the illustrations contained racial caricatures and stereotypes. If I Ran the Zoo includes drawings of Asian and African people that reflect outdated and offensive depictions that were common in the 1950s but are now widely recognized as racist.
No one is being prevented from owning, reading, or collecting the book. Existing copies still circulate in libraries, classrooms, private homes, and resale markets. The decision simply means the publisher no longer wishes to keep printing and profiting from imagery that is now understood to be harmful.
This is not about “erasing history,” but about acknowledging it accurately. The history still exists including the fact that Dr. Seuss was a beloved author and someone who, like many public figures of his time, used racial stereotypes in his early work.
