There’s nothing quite like True Blood and it grips you from the very beginning. The premise is brilliant, and the show is very well-casted with talented actors. You easily get invested in the characters and their backgrounds. Anna Paquin is amazing as Sookie. Some comments refer to her as annoying but that’s what society calls an assertive, strong-willed woman who doesn’t let others tell her what to do. People also complaining about the nudity need to get a grip. If naked bodies and sex scenes make you uncomfortable, just move on to something family-friendly. It’s rated MA and gives fair warnings of adult content.
That aside, the show was so ahead of its time with real LGBTQ+, social, and political issues that are naturally represented. There’s also mystical elements with references to Greek and European mythology. For a horror show, it is well-balanced with drama and humor… until things get strange and far darker, but not in a good way.
From the start of Season 4 onwards, there’s a different feel to the series and weird gaps. Things quickly go downhill in a thousand directions with confusing and unnecessary subplots. You see shifts in personalities and tragic endings of beloved characters that kinda felt out of left field and frustrating. Bill and Sookie’s transformation as people, and the once loving connection turned sour (most of it justified by Bill’s cruelty) and complicated, along with some nonsensical aspects around it ultimately felt like a gut punch.
The ending, my god.. its painful, anti-climactic, and beyond disappointing. Almost like everything we experienced meant nothing in a sense because there’s no true resolution. I’ll appreciate the great aspects but the series left much to be desired.
