I don't hate this game, but I don't think it deserves praise. I've played all the games from gen 1 to now and I do not think this game was worth 70 dollars. I see people commenting about how the hate comes from gen z or alpha kids who never played X and Y so they don't get how great the story is. Well... I played those games and not ONCE did I feel moved by what unfolded. The game falls into the classic Monster Hunter Wilds storyline of "uh oh! there's some rogue big bad monsters to defeat! Let's have a boring strategy meeting about what to do while eating the same weird meal every single night" but with some and X and Y nostalgia sprinkled in. The wild zones are kind of cool, but it's mostly shooting fish in a barrel with a limited selection. The fact that you have to catch 50 of each type of pokemon when there really isn't that much of a selection just to get the shiny charm is daunting.
I WILL SAY:
The battling is cool and refreshing and I certainly think they were going in the right direction for a battle-focused game like this. They also made shiny hunting more accessible in a strange way, but it works. However, they actually took away other quality of life mechanics like being able to purchase multiple items at once from street vendors. You have to literally repeat the same conversation over and over to buy more berries or mints etc
