If you're in any doubts about the quality of this book, you have only to read Robin Hobb's review on Goodreads (yes, THE Robin Hobb).
But mine is as follows:
Hundreds of years before, humans stole dragons’ magic and banished them to a dying world. Descendants worship the dragons of old as gods, but the dragons of today have not forgotten so easily. So when Everen (the last male dragon) finds himself pulled into the human world and bonded to a human thief, he is less than thrilled at the idea.
But Everen needs Arcady to trust him to complete the bond. And then he must kill them, to save his people.
Arcady needs Everen to help pull off their biggest heist yet, all so that they can finally afford to go to university and learn the truth about the past.
Over the course of the book, these two must learn to trust each other and work together, both working towards their own ends.
What could possibly go wrong?
I loved Arcady from the very beginning. They’re curious and intelligent and determined and strong and sassy — what’s not to love?
Everen’s tortured soul is a perfect compliment to Arcady’s character. They both have troubled stories but while one is focused on clearing the past, the other is desperately trying to prove their future.
I also really liked Sorin’s twisty little story, and I’m keen to find out more about her choices in future books.
Dragonfall just gets better and better with every chapter. We start with getting to know the world and the two main characters and their motivations separately first, which I loved because I felt like I got to know them as individuals really well.
And then they meet. And then they have to work together. And then and then and then! The tension and intrigue and conflict between and within the characters keeps ratcheting up throughout, and I’m gutted I’ve finished it! Those final pages have me desperate to read on!
Highly recommend if you like dragons, prophecies, forced proximity romance, and great rep of gender identity! (Non-binary MC!) And heists. Love a heist!
