Pathetic movie in every possible way.
Firstly, it’s not 1964 anymore. Someone needs to inform the entire crew of this movie that the story and all the various dialogues and actions feel like they are from 1964.
The first thing that was intolerable in this movie was that the only opinion that seemed to matter was of this male character. His view of ‘I have to earn and pay dowry for sisters’ was glorified. No one cares about the opinions of the sisters or any other person in the movie. They haven’t even bothered to create any sort of personality to the sisters. When one of their weddings is fixed by a mediator, Akshay Kumar’s character doesn’t even ask the details of the guy, just touches the feet of the mediator that the wedding is fixed! And when he goes home and tells the sister, she is also not interested in the details of the guy, but is overly happy that her marriage is fixed!! Like who in the world (in any country) would not want details of someone they are supposed to spend their life with?
The entire demeaning of the dowry protestor by saying ‘you are only protesting because you have daughters instead of sons’ was unnecessary and the justification of men having a purpose to earn for sister/daughter’s dowries felt like they were justifying the illegal act of dowry. The justification was not even multi-perspective or intelligent, it was just ‘dowry is correct and gives us purpose’. Is supporting illegal activities the new hobby of Bollywood movies? Recently another rubbish movie called Dunki supported illegal immigration and this one supports illegal dowry.
The consequences of the girl being murdered by harassment feel like an after-thought in the last 10 mins, by which time it’s too late to inject any intelligence or sense into this badly made piece of cinema.
One of the scenes where the father of Bhumi’s character points to her head-to-toe and says ‘what will I do of this thing’ will haunt me for months and not be erased from memory as ‘demeaning behaviour by Indians due to which that country is unsafe to go to’.
Indian cinema needs to find a way to portray reality by showing different perspectives (even the woman’s perspective) not just a ‘only male person’s perspective matters’ kind of cinema.
This movie is an insult to the millions of Indian women who have their own careers and personalities and their only aim is not ‘a brother who wants to sell them off’.
Very demeaning!
