Kindly note, spoilers ahead!
Full transparency, I'm not really a fan, I've never seen the Broadway version and quite frankly I just watched this movie for the Vanessa scene. However, I am actually surprised that not enough people have mentioned this yet it was sticking out like a pimple in my opinion. The fact that the songs that quite frankly should have been bits of dialogue felt inharmonious. Reminded me of how you can randomly say things in a sing-song voice. While I appreciate the efforts of all the actors, Nina's character was pretty bland. This is my opinion of course, but I didn't get any emotion from her. Her singing was pleasant but I couldn't even sympathize with her because her face was pretty much emotionless for most of the movie. Honestly, the only reason I'm giving this movie 2 stars and not one is because of Abuela's performance which to be honest I barely understood because we needed subtitles but I still could feel the message. Also why get the audience so invested in the lives of so many characters, so many sub-plots, only to hung the audience out to dry on their different conclusions and give an unsatisfying one to the main characters? Did Sonny go to college? Did Daniela's beauty parlor succeed? What happened to the Rosario business and Benny?
