I just finished watching Love Alarm and here's a few points I can share with you.
I couldn't connect with Kim Jo-jo's character after she broke up with Sun-oh. The show didn't justify her reason for making this decision. E.g. I thought maybe they might show his parents threatening her to stay away from him. But no! She breaks up with him suddenly and doesn't give him an honest explanation.
She was really cold towards him. And for someone who has experienced loss and trauma in her life, I expected more compassion and honesty from her.
I think Sun-oh felt lonely in his life too, because he didn't have a healthy loving relationship with his parents. I liked his character, and I disagree with the depiction of him being self-centred. I think he genuinely loved Kim Jo-jo, despite her lack of wealth and popularity. He was drawn to her because she was different and he liked this about her.
He was honest, playful and silly when he was with her. He was himself. He loved her intensely which is why he struggled so much moving on.
But on that note, he did pursue her despite knowing his friend had feelings for her. That's one of the few flaws I could find in his character.
Later in the show, he asks her many times to tell him why she left him, and still Kim Jo-jo doesn't give him a proper explanation. The directors made an error here.
I loved Sun-oh's acting. When he looked at Kim Jo-jo, you could really feel and love and sorrow in his eyes.
I did like Lee Hye-yeong's character. He was a good person, selfless and filled with kindness. I'm glad he got his happy ending. This was refreshing as often it's the lead male role who gets the girl in the end.
Perhaps the director is telling us that you can learn to love someone over time, even if that intense feeling isn't there initially.
In the end, I still wasn't convinced that Kim Jo-jo's heart belonged to Lee Hye-yeong. I just didn't feel it.
I did like that the show lighlighted the dangers of living in a Love Alarm world.
I think this could be a possible reality for us. We rely immensely on apps and social media to communicate with people, etc but I think in the future it might go one step further, where people with only communicate their love digitally or through a button on an app, and not actually say phrases like, 'I love you.'
Imagine a future, where we don't hear the words, 'I love you.' Seems scary because what makes us human is slowly fading.
