A 5 out of 5 is considered perfect. I think that Control is nearly there. It's definitely one of the best games I played in 2022. I've been going through a ton of games and dropping them lately out of boredom but I could not drop Control.
Control is a Metroidvania-like game from a third-person perspective. The character Jessie who is some sort of psychic enters the game overworld called the Oldest House which is some kind of multi-dimensional plane to find her long-lost brother. She found that the inhabitance of the Oldest House is supernatural beings, members of the FBC (secret agency), and the hostile Hiss. The entire world and architecture are based on brutal style architecture where the entire world is built on carved cement. By the way, the ray tracing in this game is out of this world. The lighting and the reflection only amplify how good this world looks! The overworld is a massive and dangerous labyrinth that looks intimidating at first but the maps and compass in the game can help you get back on track. Plus there is a ton of save stations that can help you jump through the overworld without a ton of backtracking.
The only downside of this game is the enemy the Hiss. Don't get me wrong. I think they are intimidating and challenging to deal with. The only thing I don't like is that they can get a little boring as you progress. Fortunately, as you explore you will encounter some unique secret bosses if you are down for an extra challenge.
I think the focus of the game isn't on the story but on the lore and inhabitant of the Oldest House. The game emphasizes the importance of each character's role and progression.
It has the right amount of difficulty where it's fun but also challenging. As you progress you will have more freedom to explore the overworld and be powerful enough to take down armies. The game is full of lore and exploration which can keep you interested and oftentimes you will encounter some comic relief which helps a ton with the pacing of the game. At first glance, it doesn't look like a game I want to play but once I played for a couple of hours it was just so addicting.
