I’ve loved all of the strike books so far, as well as the series. This one, although indeed gripping, left a deeply unsatisfying aftertaste. Mostly due to the extensive and confusing use of online chat and pseudonyms, often rendering it impossible to follow who was who and who did what. The endless ‘will they, won’t they’ between the two main protagonists is now growing stale but I can can see why JK is approaching the culmination of their storyline with some trepidation as, where does it go from there once the mystery and tension subsides? Finally, the ending! I felt a little aggrieved that having committed so much time to the story and at times, persevering, that the killer turned out to be who you’d typically expect. I waited for a fantastical twist that frustratingly became less likely as each of the suspects were ruled out. I felt there were at least two others that would have been a more satisfying fit. That all said, I am looking forward to the next novel and to seeing the TV series take on it.
