Immediately you are thrown into Beah's harsh reality of childhood. Each and every twist and turn there is something happening for a bigger picture. The amount of sorrow and raw emotion that are packed into such few words is incredible. *Spoiler alert here* One line that represents this is "That was the last time I saw my brother." It broke me down and knew the rest of the book was going to be a tough ride. *Spoiler ended*. But the thing is, this book makes you grateful for your family, health, and overall, an easy life. I love this book with all my heart and cannot wait to read his other books.

I have read this book multiple times. Each time emotion hits me. This is such a heartfelt book, about how a sibling bond can get you through the toughest of times. Each chapter has something new, and you are always on the edge of your seat. Although I do not recommend it to those who cannot take the harsh reality that refugees have to endure, or those who are sensitive to rape, mentions of blood, and graphic death. But I am always in awe when reading this book. 100% recommend
