I am not much of a sports person, but I love sports that have more on the line than a victory for the sake of the sport, especially when they impact world history.
Much like how "Boys in the Boat" showed the stakes of American morale against Nazi supremacy in the Olympic Games prior to World War II, "Young Woman and The Sea" showed how the equality of women in sports depended on the courage, bravery, and determination of one young woman.
And yet, HOW she achieved that victory was a collaborative effort, showing that while it takes one person to ignite the spark of change, how others choose to react to that change will be the key to making that change impactful or not.
While some details of the film may have been used to add to the drama of the film, it is more or less based in fact. The actors did a great job.
My favorite part of any film based on history is when, after the film itself is over, actual footage, photographs, and little bios that explain what happened to historical figures after the events portrayed in the film, are shown.
It makes things feel so real and grounded.
