The Creator is an incredibly frustrating experience, because you can so clearly see what might have been. Technically stunning, with staggering VFX, some great supporting performances and an incredible premise, it’s horribly let down by a clichéd, nonsensical script, stereotypical characters (the evil, warmongering US General being particularly egregious), interesting plot hooks that are never mentioned again, and a lead actor without lead actor charisma. With some (serious) re-writes, and a lead actor with the chops to carry it all, it could have been one of the all time greats. As it is, it’s film that manages to be both unlike anything you’ve ever seen, while simultaneously being something that you’ve seen so, so many times before. What a shame.
