Blood of Zeus was a show that I desperately wanted to like, but was ultimately disappointed by.
Being an avid fan of Castlevania and Greek mythology, I was hopeful for the show to have compelling plot and characters. However, the story was pretty basic, characters flat, and pretty mediocre voice acting.
Perhaps my expectations were too high after the beautiful story that Castlevania told, but I don’t think it would have been hard to make this show great.
(light spoilers ahead)
Having a Zeus vs Hera plot could have been compelling, but was ultimately extremely lazy. I had appreciated the story treating Zeus with nuance, but frustrated by the lack of nuance that Hera is given.
I wish more Gods and Goddesses were included in the plot. Classic Greek works have shown us Gods potter against each other, but half the pantheon was missing their stake in the story (especially Athena, where was she in this?).
The main human characters are also extremely bland, mostly at the fault of practically no screen time. I really felt the lack of chemistry and personality in them. I also think that this show was missing good action, especially for the humans. Alexia was probably my favorite, but solely based on potential.
Overall, I suppose it’s worth a watch. If you like Greek Mythology, there are lots of fun little bits of tradition and myth incorporated into the story. Some of the animation of backgrounds/settings was GORGEOUS, probably my favorite part of the show.
