The real interest in this novel is the effect of Susie's sudden death upon surviving family and friends, which theme is well conveyed. Susie's heavenly perch is just a narrative device: she becomes an ultra- omniscient narrator. Sebold goes too far when she has Susie briefly return to enter another's body and have relations with her boyfriend. This stretches the otherwise consistent narrative and thematic structure.
