Sky High

The basic premise is identical to the 2016 Russian series Better than Us. They even use some of the same phrases.The ending is far bleaker, which does not mean better. And if the authors wanted to send a message about the risk of relying too much on AI, it was lost in the run of the mill family thriller they ended up making.

While the basic premise sounds like a sci fi series about human reliance on machines, it ends up being a regular mix of thriller and soap opera with multiple romances. In the end, all the good guys and girls get their partner and the bad ones get punished, just as in any conventional American series. The end credits even include a dance number where the bad guys have as much fun as the good ones and the robots show they got some serious moves. For some reason, the character of the little girl (Sonya) who steals the first episodes mostly vanishes after the halfway point of the series. I wish she had been given more screen time, particularly since it's hard to explain how the robot that's so dependent on her is suddenly fine with losing all contact.
