I waited eagerly for a Ridley Scott version of Waterloo but ended up watching a turkey … phoenix no better than Steiger and portrays one of the sharpest minds in history as an imbecile! Story is not historically accurate and the editing is like a patchwork of snippets. Theatrical version ends up like Kingdom of heaven where you need the uncut version to make a cohesive story. It’s is not kingdom of heaven or gladiator .. Scott takes too much on these days and so the epic I wanted was not made. Worse of all no one else will attempt it now just like the other waited for epic Alexander which a hopelessly miscast Farrell. Phoenix and Steiger as Napoleon are totally miscast … Americans can’t do Europeans especially a cunning Frenchman ! Josephine is well played but too young for a Phoenixs Napoleon so again a parody of a great love story . Waterloo was staged all wrong with entrenchments etc and even has Napoleon charging the guns!! … who researched this?? Napoleons officers especially Ney a non event and as for the must have black senior officer… Here we go again! . Disappointed not as bad as Scott’s Robin Hood but not in the same league as his top movies! Comparable to his last duel.
