Enjoyable by new and old horror fans alike.
For a movie set in the 70s, the influence of horror and mystique feels fresh and newly inspired. If you are familiar with the more recent internet horror genre of "analog horror", you may enjoy this movie quite a bit. Both the nostalgic feeling and graininess of this "Late Night Show" create what you would assume to be a safe environment, something that maybe you'd fall asleep to as a kid because it was boring. However, you are here in real life watching a movie listed as a Horror/Comedy, so it pays to keep your eyes peeled for when things will inevitably go south for the characters.
I think what this movie does best is build up a creep factor rather than go for outright scares. There is just something that feels off and uncanny in the movie at times, and builds a sense of foreboding rather than any actual jumpscares. If you've ever seen the Adult Swim shorts like "Too Many Cooks" or "Unedited Footage of a Bear" then I think you could place that uncanniness in the same circle. They start out very normal and it's only through small details at first that you start to feel uncomfortable in a way you can't quite put your finger on.
Though not as much of a straight shot analog horror flick like Skinamarink, I think this movie checked a lot of the boxes that Skinamarink could not. Sudden juxtaposition between tense moments and then "We'll Be Right Back!" commercial breaks are jarring as intended, but also bring out the comedic side of the movie. It's a back and forth pace that allows you a moment to relax before the tension begins building again, letting you wonder once more if this time the pot will bubble over.
As an enjoyer of both film/show and internet horror, there were things in the movie that felt like The Twilight Zone meets Adult Swim skits meets Analog Horror, and I appreciated all of it. Terribly scary? No. But a more palatable genre introduction to the big screen than Skinamarink, and hopefully inspiration for more unique and creative horror movies in the future ๐
