I think that this is one of Scorsese's better films; some may not like it since it does not have the typical but shallow flash of action films, or the romantic love interests that often characterize contemporary films. However, for those that want something deeper, it treats the cross cultural clash of paradigmatic perceptions of the world and one's life purpose as Portuguese missionaries come to Japan to spread their faith. There are no heroes in the struggles of teleological self-discovery with pragmatic survival and dedication.
