Martin McDonagh delivers a slow-burn black comic masterpiece. On an insulated Irish island in 1923 two men pursue their seemingly small conflict while the Irish Civil War rages on the mainland. It starts out as nearly pure comedy then slowly transforms into something much more unexpected and, often, shocking. Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell are tremendous, Kerry Condon is funny and powerful and Barry Keoghan's performance as the island idiot is astounding. The beautiful (and beautifully-shot) locations provide perfect counterpoint to the increasingly bizarre goings-on. You continue to think about this movie long after it's over. Undoubtedly destined to be a classic.
