Watched the whole series and thoroughly enjoyed it right up till the very last scene, which I confess left me feeling bamboozled. Debra Mailman's character was heroic and sympathetic in anyone's book. The story of the character's battles to achieve her goals against the odds, corruption and egos surrounding her, had this old white lady rooting for her all the way. It was almost difficult not to stand up right there in our lounge room and applaud.
But, why, why, why that strange, confrontational last monologue directly to the camera (the viewer)? Who were the inferred racist aspersions aimed at? If we, the viewer had sat through 3 series of this show, then obviously we were engaged and most probably sympathetic. Why then the need for the aggressive, accusatory stance aimed directly at us? I cannot understand the reasoning.
You'd won us, we were on your side. Why then, offend us and risk turning us off in the last few minutes? A classic case of not knowing when to step back and just let the story speak for itself. I felt very saddened by this. What would have been a 5 star review has been reduced to 3 stars by this one enormous error.
