His dark materials is a fantasy story that moves across many worlds. It's largely based on a dystopia where women are oppressed and knowledge is banned.
The series is a blasphemous journey where one Lord Asriel with the help of gay angels, feminists and other liberals seeks to fight and destroy a conservative patriarchy.
Asriel is not content with earthly battles and wants to kill one whom the authors attempt to depict as God Most High, commonly referred to as the Authority, using a special knife whose blade can cut through anything.
The patriarchy is a priesthood whose great sin is the oppression of women and girls. They are the servants of this god who can be killed by mortals.
There's a 'special' girl whose role in the events is not clear but whom prophecy claims is Eve. The mother of all sin.
There are many gaps in the plot, mostly parts that don't add up and are not convincing. For example Balthamos and his boyfriend didn't have to be split.
With their ability to fly and move through worlds, the long journey by ship with the knife bearer wouldn't be necessary.
They'd be in, get the girl and out quickly without having to be separated. This makes Balthamos' rage towards the boy for forcing him to abandon his boyfriend unconvincing.
Additionally, the motives of the girls mother are so unclear and her roles are confusing at best. It's only safe to conclude that she must be crazy.
Such is the world of feminism.
The two stars are for quality acting and production. There's nothing profound here besides a group that hates the church and men.
