This movie has been on my watch list for a while. The trailer for this movie had originally got me excited. The first half of this movie pulls you in with an interesting premise. Two teenagers find themselves through a world of fiction while navigating real life.
If you liked the old goosebump tv show. Then you most certainly will fall in love with this film. There was a moment this movie had me hooked in the second part but then eventually lost me.
The plot of this movie definitely could have been fleshed out more. It seemed like the director wanted this film to have everything. Yet left things out that could have made this movie one of its kind.
Overall it was the stunning visuals and cinematography that made me keep watching till the very end. I however wouldn't have put this in the genre of horror or thriller but maybe another category.
I wish we also spent a little more time connecting with the characters. I saw the tv glow message. Could have been built up a bit better by focusing more on the psychological impact of escaping into too much fiction and exploring more of why these characters want to escape in the first place.
As for the representation of queerness I feel like the themes were there but not enough to make it obvious that this was about transitioning. I just felt that this movie was lacking something that could have made this movie even more special.
People tend to blame mostly the actors when it comes to a movie they dislike. Forgetting that they are trying their hardest at presenting what was given to them by the writers. I think the actors actually did a pretty good job in portraying the material they had.
