Having read the book and watched the movie, needless to say I was VERY excited for this TV show and wow- it was AMAZING. I love how they changed up the characters but the story has still been accurate to the book, especially with the race swapping. I love how they changed Louis to a Black man in early 1900's New Orleans, it was- in my opinion- a great decision and makes the story a lot better and his character a lot more interesting (to be honest, I found him kind of boring in both the movie and book). Although Claudia's personality has been quite different, I still enjoy her character and, again, the story is still very accurate to the book even with the character change. The show makes me feel like Louis and Claudia are more father and daughter because in the book I genuinely could not tell if they were dating or father and daughter.
In the movie, although it was queer-coded it still erased the queerness of the novel, (quick book spoiler warning) in the book Louis and Armand don't kiss, sure, but they both have directly said that they love each other. Of course, they did almost kiss in the movie, but they didn't actually kiss. They didn't even say they loved each other like in the book (pg. 288 “You have me. I love you.” -Armand talking to Louis. Pg. 292 “‘And it's something else, which is irrational and unexplainable and which satisfies only me….’ ‘... Which is?’ she asked. ‘That I love him.’” -Louis talking to Claudia about Armand).
So seeing both queer romance and queer kissing in the show gives me a big feeling of euphoria, although I don't love Louis and Lestat’s relationship (seeing as its toxic, possessive, manipulative and abusive) I'm very excited to see more about Louis and Armands relationship in season 2- also to see more of Armand and him being an actual vampire because he's always been my favorite throughout all adaptations.
Also the casting choice was just absolutely perfect, Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid are amazing as Louis and Lestat, not to mention Bailey Bass as Claudia- BREATHTAKING. She is, by far, my favorite actor in the show. Although aging up Claudia was a bit of a dodgy choice- seeing as a big part of her character is that she's stuck in 5 year olds body and she can't age, changing her to 14 was a big leap, although she still can very much go through the same problem just not on the same extreme of a level. But I'd much rather have Bailey Bass (a 19 year old and, like I've said, an amazing actor) rather than a 7 year old who could grow up with a lot of problems from being a child actor (as many child actors have).
But I may be biased on how much I love this show because I love vampires, history (especially 1920's Harlem + New Orleans), religious trauma + symbolism, father daughter relationships and gay romances with a lot of emotional rollercoasters.
