When I look at this show, I try to remind myself not to compare it's original series, and when I do that, I consider it to be a great show. However, when comparing it to the show it was based off (the og Winx) there are a few things I highly dislike. Also, there are a few things just looking at it as a show in general that I don't like.
First I want to start with the beginning of the show. We are just thrown into Bloom's first day at Alfea and we have no idea what led to that. We have no idea how Mrs. Dowling even found Bloom or Bloom's initial reaction to finding out she was a fairy. We are also thrown into new terms such as the "otherworld" and "burned ones", and it's only like the first 5-10 minutes of the show. I don't know about anyone else, but I found it EXTREMELY confusing and overwhelming.
Now, to move onto the part I'm really fired up about, which is the characters.
Let's start with the obvious, that the character's were whitewashed. For example, we have Musa, who was originally (correct me if I'm wrong) supposed to be East Asian. Now I'm pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong) she's not East Asian in the show. Though, the actress playing her did a phenomenal job. THEN, we have FLORA! Flora was my favorite character growing up and now that I'm older watching the new/mature version of Winx, I'm incredibly upset that they not only changed her race from Latina to white, but also changed her name to Terra. THE DISRESPECT! ALSO THEY DID NOT HAVE TECNA!!! WHO DOES A SERIES BASED OFF THE WINX WITHOUT TECNA????
Also, the friendship between the girls was extremely confusing. They all seemed really aggressive to each other throughout the entire show, but then claim they're friends later on? Correct me if I am wrong but that's not how friendships primarily work. The characters all had very strange personalities that did not work well with each other. So, the whole friendship aspect of the show didn't make sense to me....I was lost.
The show also did not touch base on the "otherworld" (as they call it) very well. All I know about the Otherworld is that it's run by some psycho chick named Luna (Queen of Solaria?) and she is the "Queen of Light" and has a lot of guards that help protect Alfea. The Otherworld just seems to be the UK with some gnarly creatures in it. Also, what the heck are blood witches?
A few things I did like about the show was the story line. I like that there were some twists and turns throughout the show and you never knew who was the bad guy and who wasn't.
I also really liked Beatrix. I thought she was a good take on the og winx's enemies, the Trix. Get it? Beatrix and Trix? K, I'm done. I found Beatrix to be an embodiment of Icy, Stormy and Darcy. See, she has the mastermind that Icy had, the manipulation skills Darcy had, and the powers Stormy had. So, essentially, Beatrix was Netflix trying to incorporate the Trix. They also added more personality behind the "Trix" aka Beatrix. She had a better background story and she was fully painted as "evil".
